Program Description

Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field which combines mathematical and computer sciences with biology and/or medicine. With the recent advancements in biotechnology, biologists are frequently overloaded with large datasets which need to be stored and analyzed in automated ways. Bioinformatics uses many areas of computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to process biological data. It now entails the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theory to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data. Bioinformatics provides the tools to understand complex biological systems ranging from entire ecological systems, to specific human diseases, to cellular and molecular networks.

Bioinformatics is essential in examining how data from biological experiments can be used to generate critical information about gene sequence and function, protein structure, molecular evolution, drug targets and disease mechanisms in today's science– and technology–driven world. This emerging field requires individuals with a multi–disciplinary background in biology and computer science.
